The World Assembly has been officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in acknowledgment of the role local and regional governments play in sustainable urban development and in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda (NUA). It constitutes the representative mechanism through which the local and regional governments constituency provides inputs to the global agendas, building on the expertise of communities. The last session of the World Assembly, moderated by Shipra Narang Suri, UN-Habitat Chief of Urban Practices Branch, addressed the importance of the New Urban Agenda as the cornerstone towards the achievement of one universal development agenda.
